  • grub error: symbol 'grub_puts_' not found

    I updated from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, and after installation, the computer restarted. When grub loaded, all I get is a screen that says error: symbol 'grub_puts' not found and a useless grub prompt that looks like grub_rescue I've tried reinstalling grub from the livecd (usb drive) following this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows to no avail. Sometimes, when I start up from the live usb, linux doesn't recognize the harddrive at all. It's not in the places menu, nor does fdisk list anything. If anyone can help fix up grub so it recognizes and boots up the two os's I have installed, I'd appreciate it. Also, I know little about grub, so try and make it easy to understand.

    If I list df output for KB, MB and GB, they do not match e.g. $ df -k |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 12796048 732812 11413172 7% /xxx $ df -m |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 12497 716 11146 7% /xxx $ df -h |grep xvdb /dev/xvdb1 13G 716M 11G 7% /xxx 12796048 KB = 12496.14 MB so that is slight off but OK 12796048 KB = 12.2 GB, 12407 MB is also 12.2 GB so why df is showing 13 GB or am I missing something?     I have OwnCloud setup and it has a feature called External Site. It loads a site in an iframe, so you can stay in the websites shell. I have a page running on a reverse proxy. Is there anyway to only allow the OwnCloud page to access the reverse proxy while blocking any other connections to it?     hi guys today my first day on asterisk on ubuntu. I installed vmware and then ubuntu and then on ubuntu i am running asterisk. i started the asterisk server successfully by following a tutorial. After making few changes into the sip.conf i want to reload the sip.conf i issue the command sip reload and nothing happens neither the commands to restart the asterisk server work actually the commands do not exists can some please throw light or point to right direction. thanks

  • Limit the amount of data that can be stored in a folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04?

    I'm in the process of building my first server. It's up, it's running, I'm transferring copious amounts of data away from my horrid little Drobo (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE, EVER). However, there's one thing I have yet to do: I'd like to set it up for Time Machine backups as well. I've seen all the guides and I have some idea of how to set the whole thing up, but the issue is that Time Machine will just fill up as much space as you let it. So if I let it lose in my 8 TB zpool it'll slowly consume every last available sector. This, of course, is not acceptable. I have a folder at the root of my zpool called "ZFS Time Machine" and I would like to limit it to 1 TB (all I need for backup purposes). However, I have no idea how to do that. Is this possible? I can continue using a small external hard drive attached via FW800 if I have to but I'd much rather prefer putting everything on my server.

  • Sharing files from Ubuntu to Mac

    Hi, Running Ubuntu 10.04 in one office and we want a couple of Mac's in another office to be able to connect to shares on this computer. Want a fairly simple solution to this if one exists. Started looking at setting up a VPN using PPTP but it seems quite complicated. Also seen mention of VNC but this seems more related to sharing desktops and all i want to do is share a directory. Could i just install open SSH and have the Mac users mount a share over SSH using public/private key encryption?

  • Site Isn't Enabled When Apache Restarted and No Error Message

    I have added a new sites-available file but the site isn't enabled when apache is restarted. All the existing sites continue to work fine. There is no error message in /var/log/apache2/error.log There is the message, in the error log showing that I shut down the server and restarted: caught SIGTERM, shutting down There is nothing fancy about the site. The only special thing is the name is: domain_name.tv I can't imagine why that would matter, but at this point I can't imagine why the site isn't enabled or at least an error message given. Server running Ubuntu 12.04.

    I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?     I have just purchased a new HP dv7t-7000 and I would like to run Windows 7 / Ubuntu. How do I setup the dual boot? Can I install both operating systems with an 8gb USB drive? Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive. I can only see using it for windows 7 - which I have installed in order to play games. Thank you!

  • Differing packages between Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10

    So I've been playing around with VirtualBox and both of the above Ubuntu versions and I've noticed that there are some differences between the available packages when doing a apt-cache search <package>. Some of these I'm sure are obvious, as they potentially only work on their respective systems. But I've noticed specifically several ruby packages differ. So my question is whether or not there's a way to get some of the ruby packages (ruby1.9.1-full for example) which only seem to be available on 9.10 (yup, I did a sudo apt-get update on both 9.10 and 9.04) on my 9.04 system? Is there a way I can just do a kernel upgrade on 9.04, or whatever else may be needed in order to get at these more recent packages?

  • Change Gnome panel profile according to number of displays

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Laptop. I have a startup script which enables external displays, if they are connected. It runs at GDM startup, configured in /etc/gdm/Init/Default. When i'm running without external displays, Gnome should use 2 Panels. When i'm using 2 external displays, Gnome should add an additional Panel to the second display. But this should of course be removed again if i detach the external displays (and restart). Can i configure this use case by using Gnome Panel-profiles? I read that there is a startup option "--profile" for gnome-panel, but i don't know how and where i could switch the profile, especially because this has to be done after recognizing the number of displays. Or can i add a general Gnome profile and switch between those profiles somehow to achieve this behavior?

  • Why isn't "(ulimit -d 1000; firefox) &" working?

    I'm trying to limit the memory usage of firefox to prevent it from stalling the whole system with problematic web sites. I tried, in bash: (ulimit -d 1000; firefox) & This should limit the memory usage to 1000kB. Then I opened YouTube, and noticed, in top, that firefox is using 2.6% of the memory, or about 200MB, and not crashing. Clearly the limit is being ignored. Why is that, and how can I enforce it correctly?

    I have a PHP script that is for personal use that goes through a folder and lists all the pictures in the folder. The pictures are pages from a book, so it is important that they be in order. They are named so that in alphabetical order, they are also in the correct page order. I had it running on my Mac OS server, and it worked fine, listing them in order because Mac OS apparently keeps files alphabetically. Now, since I've switched to Ubuntu, it is listing them in a seemingly random order. Is there any way to order files in Ubuntu server so that they are in alphabetical order?

  • EC2 out of space on root disk, moving it to ephemeral

    I am spawning a few test servers on ec2 that happen to be m1.larges. I am using these test servers for load balancin testing. Anyways, most of the servers I have used before have been backed by EBS, but these instances (ubuntu 11.04) obviously come with a lot of ephemeral space located @ /mnt. What I noticed that is happening is I am running on space on the root disk. I am trying out this tutorial http://www.turnkeylinux.org/docs/using-instance-storage moving my /home + /usr directories to /mnt and then remounting them. This works except it does not survive a reboot. Am I missing something here or is this tutorial not completely correct. How do I make space on my / drive so I can do stuff and survive re-boots.

Now when I try to launch my server using: ./openerp-server.py I have this error: ERROR: Import xpath module ERROR: Try to install the old python-xml package It seems that this version of openerp doesn't work with python2.6. Can I redirect openerp to use old version of Python?

    I tried to upgrade Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04. I left it for 24 hours but the upgrade did not complete. Hence I cancelled the upgrade. I thought I will copy all the files that I have to a DVD/CD and try try downloading a copy of Ubuntu. But now, I cannot open any file or copy them. I cannot even shutdown my laptop.
